Both doors to the deck use a dual bolt system. In order to lock or unlock the door you first pull up on the handle to engage/disengage the vertical lock and then you can use the normal door lock to lock/unlock the other bolt. If you are having troubles unlocking or locking the door, it probably means you need to pull up on the handle further.
